Description

Nearly 3 million people in the United States use a wheelchair for mobility. Obtaining the correct wheelchair is a complex process and if one is unable to obtain the correct wheelchair it may lead to untoward consequences of injury, contribute to activity limitations, and may impact one's ability to be employed. Unfortunately, there is no consistent measurement standard or procedure for the practitioner who prescribes a mobility device.

This qualitative study utilized expert opinion of various practitioners in the wheelchair assessment and procurement process. Over a two year period of time, the practitioners contributed to a practice guide for the wheelchair assessment process. Once the original draft of the practice guide was developed a secondary review by additional experts in the field further reviewed the guide to establish content validity.

The purpose of the Wheelchair Service Provision Guide is to provide an appropriate framework for identifying the essential steps in the provision of a wheelchair. It is designed for use by all participants in the provision process including consumers, family members, caregivers, social service and health care professionals, durable medical equipment (DME) suppliers, manufacturers, funding source personnel and policy makers. This Guide does not specifically address requirements associated with any particular funding source. It provides guidance on when funding issues should be addressed in the process and how to address them with the client so that he or she is able to make informed decisions.
