This session will explore the differences in driving techniques used with power wheelchair bases (Front, Mid, and Rear Wheel Drive). The discussion will focus on various drive wheel configurations and base options to assist the clinician/provider in recommending the most appropriate power wheelchair base for each individual consumer. It will also provide insight that will help guide the rehab team in teaching a client to use their specific wheelchair to its maximum functional performance. Hands-on learning time with various wheelchairs will be provided allowing the participants to experience some differences among power wheelchair bases and options.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify two techniques for turning a corner with front-wheel drive, mid-wheel drive, and rear-wheel drive power wheelchairs.
- Discuss the pros and cons of having 6 wheels on a wheelchair (mid-wheel drive) compared to 4 (front/rear-wheel drive).
- Discuss two methods to turn toward an obstacle in front, mid, and rear-wheel drive to maneuver in certain situations.
