Mary Ellen Buning, PhD, OTR, ATP

Mary Ellen is an occupational therapist practicing in the area of assistive technology since 1987. She earned a B. S. in Occupational Therapy from the University of Florida, an M. S. in Occupational Therapy from Colorado State University, and a Ph. D. in Rehabilitation Science at the University of Pittsburgh.  She is an active member of RESNA where she coordinates the professional service groups and is credentialed as an Assistive Technology Professional.  Dr. Buning is also the Chair of the COWHAT Breakout Group on Education and Training and it RERC WTS-2 will serve as leader of Project P5 in years 3 through 5 and the leader for GR2: Information Dissemination and Knowledge Translation.  Dr. Buning is active in the American Occupational Therapy Association, its Technology Special Interest Section and the Occupational Therapy Association of Colorado. As part of her doctoral work she developed WheelchairNet, a virtual community on the topic of seating and wheeled mobility, and investigated the use of the World Wide Web as a decision-making support for persons who use wheelchairs.  She is an experienced educator and presenter and has a strong commitment to the use of the Internet and telecommunications to support data acquisition and survey research, to improve practice, and to disseminate research findings. 

Dr. Buning recently moved from the University of Colorado Denver to the University of Louisville and the Department of Neurological Surgery, where she is developing an assistive technology program as a support to the Spinal Cord Medicine program at Frazier Rehab Institute and collaborating in the development of a Certificate in Rehab Engineering and Assistive Technology in the Speed School of Engineering.

Description:

This presentation covers the basic principles of wheelchair transportation safety. The 40-minute talk covers the topics of wheelchair securement with 4-point strap type tiedowns and docking systems, effective occupant restraint, and wheelchairs that meet the WC19 safety standard for use as a seat in a motor vehicle (WC19-compliant wheelchairs). It also presents how to use best practices when working with a non-WC19 compliant wheelchair. The presentation concludes with a video series of 30mph/20g sled tests that depicts misuse and proper use of wheelchair securement, occupant restraint and the use of WC19-compliant wheelchairs for children and adults.

Learning objectives:

Upon attending this seminar, participants will be able to:

  • Participants will be familiar with the characteristics of the “right equipment” for improved safety for those who ride in vehicles while seated in a wheelchair.
  • Participants will understand the contribution of voluntary safety standards when choosing equipment for wheelchair securement, occupant restraint and mobility devices.
  • Participant will have access to additional resources for learning more about wheelchair transportation safety.

  4. Select and complete the course post test and evaluation.
  5. Click Submit

You will receive your CEU Certificate via emailed pdf.
