Description:
Motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of death for children over the age of three years in the US. This presentation will review the basic principles of child passenger protection and explain how these concepts should be applied to enhance travel safety for children with special healthcare needs, particularly for those individuals who weigh less than sixty-five pounds. The importance of providing occupant protection for young children will be reviewed as will the tradeoffs between safety and medical needs. The material covered will include an overview of common transportation considerations for children who benefit from specialized seating and summarize how to match children with commercial products that can meet these needs. Topics addressed will include issues for children who: must travel in a reclined posture, cannot tolerate localized loading, need support to maintain an upright seated posture, have behavioral challenges, use mobility aids, or must travel with orthopedic devices, ventilators, or feeding tubes. The product categories reviewed will include carbeds, specialized and conventional child safety seats, vests, harness systems, and wheelchairs. Considerations for both the private vehicle and school bus environment will be addressed. Attendees will also learn about educational opportunities and resources that are available for those who want to learn more on this topic.
