Description
We will discuss children with cerebral palsy who have benefited from surgical interventions related to orthopaedic deformities. Children with high tone, particularly cerebral palsy, are prone to muscle contractures and spinal deformities including scoliosis and kyphosis. Standards of care can include intrathecal baclofen pump implantation, spinal fusion surgery, varus derotational osteotomies, and soft tissue lengthenings. This talk will cover seating and positioning options, both pre and post surgical intervention. The talk will address issues that prevented proper positioning and the various non surgical attempts to delay surgeries. It will conclude with how the surgical interventions improved seating and positioning and overall quality of living.
Learning Objectives
Upon viewing this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Define common orthopaedic surgeries for the child with cerebral palsy
- Understand the impact surgical interventions have on seating and positioning of the child with cerebral palsy
- Informed regarding the immediate changes required in seating and positioning after the surgical intervention
